Fieldtrips

1. Aerial Tour - 5 January 2003. A group of 26 Sabah Society members and their families aboard a Russian light aircraft, Antonov AN3-120 that hovered over northwest Sabah, from Kota Kinabalu city to Tuaran, Kiulu, Mount Kinabalu, Kudat, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau and the Mantanani Islands. The trip was a success in achieving the objectives of the Society, "To Know Sabah", this time from the air.



2. Trekforce Jungle Training Course, 23-27 & 27-30 January 2003. Trekforce Expeditions, a non-political organization invited the Sabah Society to participate by sending four intrepid representatives to join in eight days of jungle survival training with their new batch of volunteers. The four members were stuffed with lectures as well as practical lessons.





3. Camping trip to Simpang Mengayau, the Tip of Borneo, Kudat. 15-16 March 2003. 39 members and their families participated in this camping trip to the latest hot spot of Sabah, Simpang Mengayau located at the northern tip of Borneo. The water is clean, the air is fresh, the wind is strong and the view is breath taking. These are some of the comments from the participants.



4. A group of 27 members and their families visited Mantanani Island again. This was the 3rd time the Society organized fieldtrip to this paradise island, surrounded by shallow lagoons.



5. Mount Kinabalu Climb, 18-20 April 2003. Led by the President himself, with two from the Committee, a big group of 28 young and old scaled the mountain with much anticipation. Many were first timers and those who reached the summit the next day had a lot to tell those who weren't able to do it.



6. Sea-walking Experience in the month of May see some members who dare to venture into an experience of a lift time specially for the non-swimmer and non-diver. Sea-walking is the latest adventure in underwater experience without oxygen tanks or complicated equipment.



7. Helicopter Sightseeing Tour on 31 May 2003 attracted 40 Society members to have a bird's eye view over Penampang and scenic Sabah coutryside. The Hightlights include an aerial view of Penampang with the Crocker Range as the backdrop, paddy fields, kampung houses, Moyog River, Monsopiad Cultural Village, Dewan Huguam Siou, KDCA Building, Donggongon township and part of KK city.



8. A group of 22 Sabah Society members with their families paid a visit to the Sabah's only tea plantation at Ranau.



9. Discovering Sabah's Lost World - Maliau Basin by 11 energetic members of the Society including a13 year old young man for a seven days expedition in September.




10. A special treat for Society members to visit the Borneo Marine Research Institution, UMS Aquarium and Museum








Public Talks

A) Mr Shuyam Nirav received a Certificate of Appreciation from the President after giving the first talk of the year " The Wonderful World of Durian" on 6 January 2003



B) The speaker, Ms Stella Moo-Tan, received a momentum from Datuk CL Chan while Tengku Datuk (Dr) Adlin, the immediate past president and Datuk Joseph Gontavid, the Director of Sabah Museum looked on. The talk on "Agnes Newton Keith Revisited" had drawn in a big crowd on 9 January 2003



C) The talk on "Traditional Musical Instruments of Sabah" was given by Associate Professor Dr Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan. She was receiving the Certificate of Appreciation from the President, Datuk CL Chan. on 7 February 2003.



D) On 20 February 2003, Dr Jamili Nais received a memento from the President after presenting his talk on "Rafflesia of the World: Diversity, Evolution and Conservation.



E) The Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Tan Sri Professor Datuk Sri Panglima Dr Abu Hassan Othman on 25 February received a memento from President, Datuk C.L. Chan after presenting his talk on "UMS: The Way Forward". Looking on was Pn Zahra Yaccob, Hon Secretary of the Society.



F) On 5 March 2003, Drs Peter Koomen from the Netherlands, presented a very interesting talk on "Spiders!" He received a certificate and a Sabah Society publication from the President.



G) 18 March 2003 A talk on "Natural Resource Use & Community in Banggi" was presented by Dr Fadzillah Majid Cooke. In the picture was Pn Zahra Yaacob, the speaker and the President.



H) Mr James Lam Chee Seng, speaker of "Conservation & Sabah Land Law: The Legal Perspective received a memento from Vice President Dr Heng Aik Cheng on 3 April.



I) Mr Wilfredo M Torres III gave a talk on "The Study of Sea Bajau in Sulu Island: A comparison to Semporna Sea Bajau. He received a memento from the Society's Hon Treasurer, Mr Daniel Soo on 9 April 2003.



J) On 16 April, Mr Francis Liew, Assistant Director of Sabah Parks, received a memento from President Datuk C.L. Chan.



K) In conjunction with this year's World Wetlands Day, the Kota Kinabaly City Bird sanctuary together WWF Malaysia's Partners for Wetlands programme organized a morning of activities on 16 February at KKCBS to celebrate the beauty and benefits of wetlands. Picture showed President, Datuk C.L. Chan together with Immediate Past President, Tengku Datuk (Dr) Adlin planting seedlings of Rhizophora apiculata, the commonest species of mangrove tree, in the KK City Bird Sanctuary.



L) On 17 January 2003, Datuk Mohd Fauzi Patel, the guest speaker of the Annual Dinner presented a talk on "The Chief Ministers of Sabah". He received a copy of the Society's famous publication, Kinabalu: Summit of Borneo from the President, Datuk C.L. Chan.




M) On 19 March 2003 The Society organized a public forum entitled "Gaya Street - the Future" The four speakers were Datuk Hiew Thien Choi, speaking about the original concept; Datuk Yong Teck Lee, speaking on some of the original reservations of the local occupiers. Datuk Ambrose Lee, who shared something about his experiences; and Dr Chua Kim Heng, the present Director-General of DBKK, speaking about his hopes for the future. At the center was Dr Richard Barrow, chairman of the forum.






N) The Sabah Society annual dinner held on 17 January 2003 was attended by 200 members and friends. The Guest of Honour was the State Secretary of Sabh, YB Datyk K Y Mustafa and the guest lecturer was veteran journalist Datuk Mohd Fauzi Patel. Members had the honour of hearing about the Chief Ministers of Sabah from the time of the formation of Malaysian from someone who worked closely with a number of the early Chief Ministers. The dinner was a lively affair with varied entertainment provided by members and their children, lucky draws and auctions.



O) Dr Pamela Sodhy receiving a memento from Mr Albert Teo, after presenting her paper on Malaysian Relations under the Bush Administration: The Political, Ecoomic and Security Aspects.



P) Datuk C L Chan, President of the Society with the speaker Dr Gary J Martin who gave a talk to the Society entitled 'Project Etnobotani Kinabalu: The Making of a Dusun Ethnoflora in Sabah



Q) Tengku Datuk (Dr) Adlin presenting Ms Wendy Hutton a certificate of appreciation after her talk on "Lankayan Island: a Sanctuary in the Sulu Sea"



R) Datuk CL Chan, President of The Sabah Society, presenting a certificate and book to Tengku Datuk (Dr) Zainal Adlin, Immediate Past President in appreciation for his takk on Eco-Tourism in Sabah.



S) Rain, rain, lots of rain curbed their activities somewhat, but did not quench the adventurous spirit of these Sabah Society campers who spend a weekend at the Sayap Sayap Sub-station, Kota Belud.



T) Proboscis monkeys and fireflies – and a delicious dinner – were the highlights of the Sabah Society cruise along the Klias River.



U) Atop Mount Kinanbalu! These Sabah society members climbed the mountain via the very scenic, but difficult, Mesilau route.



V) Members of The Sabah Society who enjoyed a 3-day trip to Kapalai Dive Resort.
